How To Insure Your Conversion For Van Life
Finding Insurance for a self build camper can be difficult at the best of times let alone if you plan to live in it full time and have no registered address.
But don't worry you have come to the right place and in true van life survivors guide style we've got your back.
So today we are going to solve you a lot of headaches and direct you straight to the best solution for you.
Let's start with...
FULL TIME VAN LIFE - LIVING IN A VAN WITH NO FIXED ADDRESS
Until recently admitting to your insurance company that you lived in your van full time was a big no no in fact it still is with pretty much every insurance company out there. as soon as they find out you are planning on living in the van they just flat out refuse to insure you. If they find out you're are living in your van after you have insured it they will cancel your policy straight away.
This might not sound like a big deal however when you try to insure it with somebody else they do checks and this will show up. One of the questions they ask you when they ring you up to run through all of the policy details is have you had any policies canceled by anybody in the past and you have to say yes or no and lying on your policy can void it and they are always looking for reasons not to pay out in an accident so this is not great idea.
So in the past the basic idea was Insure your van with a MODIFIED VAN insurance company, pretend it was just for the odd week away, use a friend or families address as your registered address and if you ever had an accident "it happened on my one week away so far this year"
Thankfully these days are over and you no longer have to break any rules or risk anything at all.
Sterling insurance have just started selling policies aimed specifically at full time van lifers and better still it doesn't only cover factory built campers it covers built and modified campers too and that is literally a full house of things you are looking for.
There are a lot more details that would take me forever to type out so instead I will just post some screen shots and a link so you can check it out yourself.
NON FULL TIME VAN LIFE
If you don't plan to live in the van full time things are a lot simpler as you will have a registered address and quite likely a drive to park it on.
The problem non full time van lifers will have is the modifications, insurance companies love some upgrades and some upgrades can reduce the cost of your insurance policy however some modifications will dramatically raise the costs and some will just make most normal commercial vehicle insurance companies refuse to insure you and unfortunately for us this includes pretty much anything that wouldn't normally be in a work van. So to sum up Commercial van insurance isn't for Leisure vehicles and a panel van isn't a leisure vehicle. So you will now find yourself firmly somewhere between a rock and a hard place.
Again one of the questions you will always get when applying for your policy is does it have any modifications and you can't lie.
What you need to be searching for is MODIFIED VAN insurance as these are specialists and what you have is very specialist.
The best place to find MODIFIED VAN insurance is through a decent insurance broker that know what they are doing. You can tell them what you have and what you need and then just like on line comparison sites they can go to specific companies to try and find you the best insurance at the best price that covers what you want it to.
There are a few different brokers out there that specialise in this type of thing but the one we are going to recommend is A-PLAN and specifically their Thatcham branch. They really know what they are doing and as long as you have a registered address they can help you get things sorted in no time at all.

So that is about it really, a very quick post as it really is quite simple once you know the right places to look. This whole post would have been a lot harder to write a few months ago and we would have had to tell you to break some rules in one way or another and that's not allowed but luckily sterling insurance has stepped up to the plate for us van lifers and finally made it possible for us to write this post.
